355/365 – A Space Shuttle Is Humping A 747. . .

I guess NASA went up and quit.  Got all tired and said, “No way, man.  I’m done.”  It just put in it’s notice and said, “Space is for the stars, man.”

Well, it’s not that cut and clear.  Still, for one of the shuttles, I guess it’s quitting time.  The  Endeavor is retiring.  And what do they do for a retiring space shuttle?  Give it a gold watch and directions to Boca Raton?  Nah, they attach it to the top of a 747 and fly it all over California like some cripple . . . the 747 being a Rascal . . . like some WWI Veteran’s Parade.  Then they retire it to some California space museum.  Whoot whoot!  See ya later old timer!

Yeah, just let him keep riding on the lawn a bit more. It’ll soften the ground for when we did his gave.

I didn’s really realize what a big deal this was.  I was just sitting in the Conan lobby, writing premises when all these people come barreling out from their offices screaming about some endeavor.  Endeavor?  Man, people suddenly got real motivated on the WB  lot about their upcoming projects.  When I was told the SPACE SHUTTLE Endeavor would be doing a fly by over Warner Brothers Studios, I was still like, “Okay?  So what?  It’ll be a spec in the sky.”

So I giess the Space Shuttle Endeavor is really Wonder Woman’s invisible jet?

Little did I know.  This thing was really doing a full Southern California tour, flying really low so all citizens could see the machine that no one remembers when it was actually in service . . .our tax payer dollars at work, folks.  Still, I was on board.  It was Friday, so the offices were actually pretty empty.  Still, anyone who was there climbed into a golf cart and went to the top of the Gate 5 parking structure.  When we got up there, there were literally hundreds of people there waiting for this thing to pass by.  Looking over the lot, people were climbing up on top of studio hangers, office buildings — I greatly underestimated the importance of this event.

Well, while waiting, some guys car caught on fire across the street, so we got some pre show entertainment in the form of funnels of black smoke, the sound of tires exploding and fire engines everywhere.

Then it came . . . it was pretty cool – like watching a an old space shuttle mount a 747 while two fighter jets watched.  Sexy…

Of course, there were better pictures.  Like the ones in this article.  But, in person, it was pretty cool.
