Back on September 11, 2001, I got up in the morning and got ready for a day of memorizing. I was playing Richard III in a Chicago production. I was also unemployed, so I spent most of my days sneaking into the DePaul Library, commandeering a study room, and working on my lines for hours. That morning, I didn’t leave the apartment. Like most people, my roommates and I were glued to the Tv in horror. I tried calling my best friend Nolan because I knew he sometimes worked n the Twin Towers. I had to give up right away when the news informed us that cell towers were over loaded.
I don’y have any words of wisdom about that day. I don’t have any real advice to give. The world changed so much that day and it’s the little things I miss the most. One thing I think I miss the most is greeting my family and friends at the gate of an airport. I’m not complaining. I know that it’s part of security and that America was one of the last countries to implement that rule even before 9/11.
I was talking to Megan about it before bed, and we both hope that one day, the date 9/11 will be just that — a date. We;re not wanted people to forget, we want to move on. Megan compared it to Pearl Harbor. December 2nd is always memorialized as the day Japan bombed our own soil. However, it’s not so deeply rooted in our psyches anymore.
In any case, Megan wrote something on her Facebook wall and I think it sums things up pretty nicely:
“Be wonderful and kind to each other today…and everyday”
Then she put this video up, so, um, you know . . . happy 9/11?
